Along with the refreshed version of the first generation of the Kona in late 2020, Hyundai also unveiled the most potent version of the car, the N.
Hyundai launched the N performance division in 2013, and some of its products, such as the Elantra N and the Veloster N, took everyone by surprise. These were high-performance cars that could compete against similar vehicles offered by other car manufacturers. But the Kona N was alone in the high-performance subcompact crossover segment. Neither the Honda HR-V, the Volkswagen Taos, nor the Jeep Renegade could provide such a sporty vehicle. The Kona N was like a hot hatch on stilts, with an engine that could compete against notorious vehicles like the Golf GTI or the Civic Type R. Unlike those, its ground clearance allowed it to go over speed bumps more easily and even cross some unpaved roads. It was a unique and bold combination.
While it shared its platform with the rest of the Kona range, the N version came with significant visual upgrades. At the front, it sported the same high-mounted LED daytime running lights, but they flanked three horizontal slim air intakes between them. The wrapped-around plastic bumper sported a massive hexagonal-shaped grille where the brand’s badge took center stage, and the mesh behind it had a honeycomb pattern. The swept-back headlights that flanked it were integrated into a pair of black side scoops, while on the lower side of the apron, the car featured a discrete lip spoiler and a set of aerodynamic canards.
From its profile, the 19-inch alloy wheels were unique for this version, featuring a multi-spoke design that let bystanders see the big brake discs with red calipers. In addition, the side sills sported a red and black color package, emphasizing the car’s high-performance character. To make the car look meaner, Hyundai added black door mirrors and B-pillars. Like the rest of the Kona range, the N version featured a floating roof design with a piano-black trim on the C-post. Unlike the non-facelifted version of the Kona, which had black cladding above wheel arches, the top-spec variant of Hyundai’s subcompact crossover had body-colored ones. Out back, a dual exhaust system flanked a massive diffuser integrated under the bumper, while the roof spoiler had a double wing design with a triangular red third braking lamp in the middle.
Inside, the front occupants were hugged by high-bolstered bucket seats with embroidered N letters on the seatbacks. They flanked a center console that housed the gear selector for the standard automatic transmission. At the same time, atop the center stack, the 2021 Hyundai Kona N featured a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system that supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In the back, the automaker placed a bench seat profiled for two occupants but with three headrests.
Under the hood, Hyundai installed a two-liter turbocharged engine from the Elantra N. It pumped out 280 PS (276 hp) sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic (wet dual-clutch) gearbox. Thanks to this setup, the 2021 Hyundai Kona N could rocket from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 kph) in just 5.5 seconds on its way to a capped top speed of 240 kph (149 mph). To maximize grip, the automaker installed a standard electronically controlled limited-slip differential (e-LSD).
