When Audi decided to make a shift in its car's nameplates, it didn't start with completely new vehicles but with facelifted ones such as the 1994 A6, which was a refreshed Audi 100 (Audi 5000 in the U.S.).

Audi started to change names with its flagship model, the A8, which replaced the former V8 model in 1994. This marketing strategy paid off since the automaker's analysts considered that a simple name that would include a letter would be easier to remember.

The A6's exterior still followed the same clean lines introduced by the Audi 100 in 1990. However, the headlights didn't feature the same angular lines and sharp corners at the front since these were slightly curved. Thus, the carmaker tried to adapt the old flat-surfaces concept to the newer bio-design trend already on other vehicles on the market. In addition, the car's profile revealed new chromed trims around the glass area, which gave it a more luxurious appearance.

Inside, the dashboard was slightly enhanced, especially thanks to the silver rings surrounding the dials and gauges inside the instrument cluster. Moreover, more features, such as heated seats, were available on the lower trim levels. The cabin provided enough room and comfort for five adults, although the center tunnel that crossed the car from front to back affected the legroom of the middle-seated passenger on the bench in the back.

Under the hood, Audi installed a very wide choice of engines, either gasoline or turbo-diesel. Front or all-wheel drive systems were available for selected engines, and so was the four-speed automatic transmission.
